09 Mar Autumn Ride in the Algarve!
As we head into spring and longer days are just around the corner, thoughts turn to cycling in the sunshine, views of a cooling sea and the pleasures of exploring pastures new. If you have filled most of your holiday allocation but are keeping a few days back “just in case”, here’s the excuse you were looking for. Autumn cycling in Portugal!
The Algarve may mean large hotels on crowded beaches to some but just a few kilometres away from the beach, the landscapes are unpopulated, the villages pristine, the tarmac a joy.
This little known area of Portugal offers fabulous cycling amongst valleys filled with orange and lemon blossoms, cycling in the tracks of the Volta ao Algarve up the mighty Foia, and a reminder that there are places left with a slower pace of life, where you are likely to come across sheep in the middle of the road, and piles of freshly harvested cork.
Our recommended route starts near the Spanish Portuguese border, heads to the beach at Vilamoura, up to the mountains at Monchique, and back down to the sea at Sagres, Europe’s most south westerly point.
