Wales Coast Path Cancer Challenge – 14th February – 10th March 2024

Wales Coast Path Cancer Challenge – 14th February – 10th March 2024

We are embarking on one of our most ambitious challenges yet.

Craig Maxwell will be attempting to walk the length of the Wales Coast Path in a 26-day challenge supported by friends, family, celebrities and supporters. This is an incredible 780 miles and will include 3 days of cycling with the rest being on foot.

In 2023 we had the privilege of working with Craig on a Cardiff to Paris ride to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre and the QuicDNA project, and we are delighted to be working with him again to help him complete this challenge.

In September 2022 Craig was unfortunately diagnosed with incurable and inoperable EGFR lung and bone cancer. Since then he has taken on many challenges to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre and awareness of the QuicDNA project. He has also set up the Maxwell Family Genomics Fund with the aim to support and advance cancer research, particularly in the field of genomics, and enhance diagnosis and treatment in Wales.

To date Craig and his supporters have raised over £1 million.

The Challenge

Starting in Chester on February 14th, the walk and cycle will see Craig, his family, friends and celebrity guests take on the 780 miles to Cardiff in 26 days. 780 miles has been chosen to represent the 78 days it took Craig to receive his diagnosis from the point of finding his tumour. There are 26 days of walking which represent the target number of days to getting a diagnosis.

Throughout the walk Craig will be carrying the match ball for the 6 Nations Wales v France game on the 10th March.

Each of the 23 days of walking offers 30 spaces, inviting participants to raise £500 for the fund and take on the challenge of walking 26 miles through breath-taking Welsh countryside. Hikers can choose to walk as many of the 26 legs as they like, provided they fundraise and are fit enough!

Craig will be joined each day by a different celebrity, including Sam Warburton, Jamie Roberts, Gethin Jones, and Rhys Williams to name a few.

Rhys Williams, former Welsh Rugby Union Player, joined Craig on his Cardiff to Paris bike ride and had this to say:

‘What a ride! Had the best 4 days cycling from Cardiff to Paris in support of my good friend, Craig. An amazing finish line under the Eiffel Tower fantastically organised by the team at pie who were there to support us every step of the way. Now on to the next challenge, a 26-day hike along the Wales Coast Path! I urge you to get involved and once again support Craig in another epic challenge in his fight to help raise awareness, funds and improve the diagnosis timeframe of cancer.’
