Slovenia has recently been making a name for itself in the cycling world. Primož Roglič became the first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour when he won the 2019 Vuelta a España. In 2020, Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de France, while Primož Roglič finished second.

The Triglav National Park in the north west corner of Slovenia is generally considered to be the most dramatic part of the country and it is at the heart of our event. We include the Vršič Pass, one of, if not the,  most famous road cycling climbs in Slovenia and on the way we pass through Bled, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will be on the trail of the Pro cyclists as we pick up the 2022 Giro d’Italia route along the world renowned Soča Valley and take on Kolovrat. Our paths will cross with the 2022 Giro d’Italia route in the Province of Friuli near Udine. Along the way there will be high mountain passes and beautiful valley roads, history, rolling hills, stunning scenery, impressive food and hotels and, of course, amazing cycling!

Itinerary

Day 1

Fly into the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, or train travel to Trieste and travel up to Ljubljana. Transfer from Ljubljana airport to night one accommodation in the capital itself. 3 options of warm up loops out of Ljubljana with lovely riding around the flatlands south east of Ljubljana and the hills.

Day 2 – Ljubljana to Kranjska Gora

We leave this tiny little capital, with its mini Venice canals and elegant bridges, and head for the north west corner of the country, a stone’s throw from Austria and Italy. 2 of the routes will stick to the wide open valley with stunning views upwards in all directions, until one then summits Pleci. The other routes get their first taste of the hills climbing Topol and Drazgose. All routes will climb up to get views down on the UNESCO world heritage site of Lake Bled and share the beauty of the Radnova valley.

Day 3

Today is the day we leave the Slovenian Alps and head over to Italy. Whichever way you leave Kranjska Gora your way south over and through Triglav is stunning. For one of the routes the Vršič Pass lies ahead. The 24km Vršič pass connects Kranjska Gora in the Save Valley to Trenta in the Soča Valley, via 50 hairpin bends; 25 on the Kranjska Gora side, and 25 on the Trenta side, in the heart of the Triglav National Park. The National Park hosts Mt Triglav which at 2864m is Slovenia’s highest mountain.

The other routes will try their hand at the Giro 2022 climb of Kolovrat or Passo Predil.

We cross into Italy, losing the height gained from rising over the Alps over the last 2 days and arrive into Udine. The heavily Venetian influenced architecture of Udine tells you immediately you have arrived in Italy.

Day 4

Today is our last day. From Udine we head parallel to the coast, and back into Slovenia along little used mountain roads, and others with wide open vistas of the vineyards before we head back into Italy, just a few kilometers away from the town of Prosecco.

In Trieste we celebrate our arrival at the coast and the end of this fabulous journey through Slovenian countryside and history, finishing in a city that still wants to be freed from the Italians and returned to the Slovenians.
