40Tude Destino Sagres Bike Ride, October 4th – 8th 2017

40Tude Volta ao Algarve Bike Ride

40Tude Destino Sagres Bike Ride, October 4th – 8th 2017

  • October 4, 2017 - October 8, 2017
    8:00 am - 5:00 pm

In 2017 40Tude are celebrating their 7th cycling Tour by going to the Algarve, Portugal. This is Portugal as you have never seen it before. Just a few kilometres away from the touristy coastline is the real Algarve. Starting near the Spanish Portuguese border, near Castro Marim, we take in the hills and valleys of this remote region before descending into the well known tourist area of Vilamoura. From here we head back up into the hills to the spa town of Monchique and the Algarve’s highest climb of Foia, and then a final push to Europe’s most south-westerly point, Sagres. The route is based around the Volta ao Algarve and gives you the chance to take on the mighty Foia and Alto do Malhão, while staying in some stunning  hotels.

The tour has been designed to accommodate experienced riders and those who may be taking on their first big adventure on two wheels. There are three daily routes to choose from; the Epic route, which is for the very experienced and those who can never say no; the Tough Route, for those that like it that way; and the Challenging Route, for those who want to push themselves but on easier routes. Whichever route you choose, there’s a challenge for everyone on a tour that offers dramatic scenery and some of the very best cycling in Europe.

In Brief:

  • Challenge Type: Road Cycling
  • Challenge Name: Destino Sagres Bike Ride
  • Destination: Algarve, Portugal
  • Dates: October 4th – 8th 2017

Day 4

 Itinerary (subject to change)

Day 1

4th October – Monte Rei (Vila Nova de Cacela) loop
Departing from London we fly into Faro and transfer to our accommodation in stunning villas on the Monte Rei golf course. Here we set up our bikes and have a light lunch. We then divide into our guided group of 10 cyclists per guide and choose which of the 3 routes on offer we would like to do. Our warm up day is a chance for you to stretch your legs and take in some of the undulating roads this remote part of the Algarve has to offer. You are unlikely to share the road with many cars as you enjoy this area.

Accommodation is in sumptuous villas surrounding a swimming pool with a private open air dinner.

Day 2

5th October – Monte Rei, Vila Nova de Cacela to Vilamoura

All 3 routes start their trip heading down to the lovely fishing village of Tavira, and our first view of the Atlantic. Those that have chosen the Challenging route then take a more westerly trajectory, along the route of the Volta, passing through extensive cork plantations and leading us into São Brás de Alportel.

From the high mountain village of Cachopo perched on top of the Caldeirão mountains, those that have chosen the Epic route peel off for their first big climb of the tour; Alto do Malhão. With an average gradient of 8.9% this cheeky 223m climb will certainly test the legs! From here it’s down to the town of Loule before descending all the way to the Atlantic ocean, at Vilamoura.

Day 3

6th October – Vilamoura to Monchique

The only way is up from here as we all head north west, into the hills and away from the crowds of the coast. The groups head out, via São Bartolomeu de Missines and Paderne, villages dotted into the landscape that depict the charm of the Algarve’s hinterland. Lunch will be an open air affair in the town square of Silves next to the church and the castle.

From Silves we head further north through incredible valleys filled with orange and almond orchards where the only other road users are sheep and shepherds. The last few kilometres approach to our hotel is through the forests of the Serra de Monchique with piles of harvested cork awaiting collection by the side of the road. At last we descend to our hotel, a hidden gem built into the mountains.

Day 4

7th October – Monchique to Sagres

Our final day in the saddle, and the completion of the east to west traverse of the Algarve!

We have saved the best to last. Turning back up the road towards Monchique town again we head back up the mountain to tackle the mighty Foia, the highest point of our trip. The Volta include this climb in their ride every year finishing off the stage with a time trial back down it! On a clear day you can see the entire coastline to the south from the 874m summit.

From here we make our way down quiet roads lined with stork nests, before finding ourselves in an area heavy with the scent of eucalyptus as we head ever west, Destino Sagres clearly in mind. We are almost within sight of the sea when we turn south heading for Sagres. Towards the end of the ride we head to the striking cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente, Europe’s most south westerly point and the opposite end of the Algarve from where we started our journey 3 days ago.

A celebratory cheers with a Sagres beer at the Sagres light house awaits before we head past the fortress and into the village of Sagres where we finish our ride.

Dinner and accommodation is in the Memmo Baleeira hotel with stunning views overlooking the ocean below.http://www.memmohotels.com/baleeira/Home.html
