Straumann Group Charity Bike Ride 2024

Straumann Group Charity Bike Ride 2024

  • September 26, 2024 - October 2, 2024
    8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Dates: September 26th – October 2nd 2024

In 2024 the Straumann Group Charity Ride will be travelling the length of Portugal – Top to Toe of one of the oldest countries in Europe. We will be riding from the northern Portuguese border with Spain to the southern coast in the Algarve.

The route we will take largely follows the N2 which dissects the country in two – east to west. National Road 2 (EN2) is to Portugal a little like the mythical Route 66 is to the United States of America. It crosses the country from one end to the other, passing through all the geographies and landscapes Portugal has to offer. It’s a little over 700 kilometres between the cities of Chaves and Faro, winding through the lush Douro, the mountainous centre and the beautiful Alentejo plains, ending in the sunny Algarve.

The Royal Road as it is called goes through eleven districts, traverses eleven mountain ranges and crosses thirteen rivers.

The Straumann Group Charity Bike Ride 2024 will follow our successful formula of guided riding, support vehicles, medics, transport of bikes to the start and back, a minimum of 3 food and drink stops a day, post ride snacks, excellent evening meals, single room 4 or 5 star accommodation, finish celebrations and amazing cycling! Along the way, valuable funds will be raised for the charity Dentaid.

Cost per person: £1,650 (€1915) – this is an approximate cost. The final amount will be dependant on numbers.

Includes all food, accommodation, drinks with meals, post ride snacks, single group airport to hotel transfers return, bike transfer from a single point in the UK to the start and back from the finish, guides and medics.

Excludes flights.

Testimonial from a Previous Rider

‘When a group of likeminded people create a challenge to improve the lives of others, it’s an uplifting experience. When you join that group and reach personal achievements you never imagined you could, it’s inspirational. The Straumann ride is full of personal and group challenges, but what a group to be a part of. Amazing camaraderie, always encouraging, supportive and looking out for each other. No-one gets left behind, and no-one gets ‘put in the corner’! So, join the ride, scale your own mountains, laugh a lot, believe in your wildest dreams and bring some good to others. You might have a sore backside, but you will never regret the experience.’ – Karen Hull

Dentaid

Proceeds from the 2022 Straumann Charity Bike Ride supported the purchase of a new, much needed charity dental unit for Dentaid The Dental Charity.  Demand for the charity’s services had soared and the vehicle was fundamental to the charity’s success in being able to provide outreach dental care for more of the most socially excluded people in our communities.

Dentaid is delighted to be partnering with Straumann again for the 2024 Charity Bike Ride in Portugal.

Straumann and its customers have requested that proceeds from next year’s event will be shared between the charity’s work in the UK and overseas (possibly a 60:40 ratio depending on the composition of the team between UK and overseas riders).

In the UK it will soon become a priority for us to purchase another new unit to replace one of our aging existing vehicles.  Two of our charity dental units are more than 20 years old and we must be mindful of the cost of repairs, the availability of parts and the environmental impact of older vehicles.  Although the cost of a new vehicle is significant (in the region of £200,000) Dentaid can apply for grants and match-funding to complement the funds raised by the Straumann Charity Bike Ride.

Fundraising

All cyclists must commit to fundraising a minimum of £1,500 / €1740 each. To start your fundraising journey please join the Straumann Team via www.justgiving.com/team/dentistsinlycra2024.

Jerseys

Straumann Group will be offering you the opportunity to purchase a package of 3 jerseys and a gilet for the trip at a cost of approximately £150/€176 for 3 jerseys (required) and £49/€58 for a gilet (optional).

These will be purchased through LeCol. Please note your size from the below sizing guide and advise on the registration form, link below.

Click here to view the sizing guide.

Sizing Tips:

Jerseys: Riders should select the jersey that best suits their ‘preferred fit’ according to the measurements. I.e. if a customer chooses a Medium – in an elite jersey – it would be a slim fit, if they would prefer a slightly more relaxed fit in the elite, then I would suggest they opt for a Large. It is worth noting that the Elite range is not something, that you can buy on the Le Col website, therefore you should still check the size guide, even if you already own some Le Col kit.

Light Gilet: This garment is part of our Club range and, as such, offers a relaxed fit. If participants would prefer a slim fit, it is recommend sizing down in this garment.

pie Guides

The Straumann Group Charity Bike Ride 2024 is a guided ride with groups being led by pie guides who are familiar with the terrain and who help all abilities complete the challenge. For those not familiar with the pie guiding system:

  • We offer guided rides to make sure we offer the very best care to our cyclists
  • All of our guides are experienced cyclists. They range from ex-professional racers to keen amateurs and all are very used to guiding groups of differing abilities, experience and skills
  • All of our guides will navigate their small group of 8 – 10 cyclists from start to finish
  • They are on hand to do mechanical work so there is no waiting around for a mechanic’s van
  • Many pie guides are first aid trained
  • On most days cyclists can change groups (up or down) at any time during the day
  • We make it suitable for most standards of cyclists – check the minimum daily distances and elevations to make sure you are happy with your level of fitness
