June 5, 2023 - June 10, 2023
    8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Slovenia is tucked away to the south of Austria, to the east of Italy, west of Hungary and north of Croatia. After centuries of war over its coastline, Slovenia now holds a 47k strip on the eastern Adriatic, south of the mighty and beautiful Trieste. Slovakia is further north, landlocked, and borders Poland. They share such an entwined history that both countries’ national flags and national anthems are often confused. (Slovenia and Slovakia are shrouded in mystery mostly due to them constantly being mistaken for one another!)

However it is Slovenia that is making a name for itself in the cycling world. Primož Roglič became the first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour when he won the 2019 Vuelta a España. In 2020, Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de France, while Primož Roglič finished second

With the capital Ljubljana being almost in the middle of Slovenia you can enjoy the very best cycling the country has to offer in just a few days.

The Triglav National Park in the north west corner of Slovenia is generally considered to be the most dramatic part of the country and it is at the heart of our event. We include the Vršič Pass, one of, if not the,  most famous road cycling climbs in Slovenia and on the way we pass through Bled, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will once again be on the trail of the Pro cyclists as we pick up the 2022 Giro d’Italia route along the world renowned Soča Valley and take on Kolovrat. Our paths will cross with the 2022 Giro d’Italia route in the Province of Friuli near Udine. Along the way there will be high mountain passes and beautiful valley roads, history, rolling hills, stunning scenery, impressive food and hotels and, of course, amazing cycling!

The Tour of Slovenia will follow the usual successful formula of 3 route options a day, each of different difficulties, guided riding, support vehicles, medics, transport of bikes to the start and back, a minimum of 3 food and drink stops a day, post ride food, excellent evening meals and accommodation, finish celebrations, and amazing cycling.

Where Are We Going?

A route breakdown by day:

Possibly the best cyclist in the world is a Slovenian – Tadej Pogačar – having won the Tour de France twice at the tender age of just 24. http://Wikipedia

He sent a special message just for the Badgers which you can see here:

  • The very best of Slovenian cycling
  • Following in the footsteps of the 2022 Giro d’Italia summiting Kolovrat
  • Parts of the Giro d’Italia 2023
  • The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lake Bled
  • The Julian Alps and a coastal finish in Trieste
  • 3 route options per day
  • Excellent accommodation, three with spas and / or swimming pools

Day 1

Fly into the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, or train travel to Trieste and travel up to Ljubljana. See flight details below. Transfer from Ljubljana airport to night one accommodation in the capital itself, the Intercontinental Hotel. 3 options of warm up loops out of Ljubljana with lovely riding around the flatlands south east of Ljubljana and the hills.

We will have dinner and spend the night in the Intercontinental Hotel, Ljubljana. The hotel boasts a rooftop restaurant and bar and a swimming pool on the 18th floor from where you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Alps. In the evening we have exclusive use of the rooftop dining room to enjoy the excellent food.

 Day 2

Ljubljana to Kranjska Gora

We leave this tiny little capital, with its mini Venice canals and elegant bridges, and head for the north west corner of the country, a stone’s throw from Austria and Italy. The Singers and Badgers will stick to the wide open valley with stunning views upwards in all directions, until the Badgers summit Pleci. The Barking groups will get their first taste of the hills climbing Topol and Drazgose. All groups will climb up to get views down on the UNESCO world heritage site of Lake Bled and share the beauty of the Radnova valley.

In the evening we will have dinner and spend the night in the Hotel Spik just a few kilometers short of Kranjska Gora, the “Chamonix of Slovenia” in the heart of the mountains, and Slovenia’s oldest ski resort. The hotel is built as a wellness centre with multiple pools, massage areas and saunas. After the success of the 2022 BBQ we’ve booked a BBQ for this evening!

Day 3

Today is the day we leave the Slovenian Alps and head over to Italy. Whichever way you leave Kranjska Gora your way south over and through Triglav is stunning. For the Barking route the Vršič Pass lies ahead. The 24km Vršič pass connects Kranjska Gora in the Save Valley to Trenta in the Soča Valley, via 50 hairpin bends; 25 on the Kranjska Gora side, and 25 on the Trenta side, in the heart of the Triglav National Park. The National Park hosts Mt Triglav which at 2864m is Slovenia’s highest mountain.

In addition, the Barking groups will try their hand at the Giro 2022 climb of Kolovrat while the Badgers and Singers will try their luck on Passo Predil.

We cross into Italy, losing the height gained from rising over the Alps over the last 2 days and arrive into Udine. The heavily Venetian influenced architecture of Udine tells you immediately you have arrived in Italy.

Tonight the accommodation is split between 2 hotels, 750m apart – The Ambassador and the Astoria, with everyone eating at the Ambassador. The walk between the two is a joy through tiny narrow streets, across piazzas and along colonnaded avenues.

Day 4

Today is our last day. From Udine we head parallel to the coast, and back into Slovenia along little used mountain roads, and others with wide open vistas of the vineyards before we head back into Italy, just a few kilometers away from the town of Prosecco.

In Trieste we celebrate our arrival at the coast and the end of this fabulous journey through Slovenian countryside and history, finishing in a city that still wants to be freed from the Italians and returned to the Slovenians.

At the end of the day we finish at the spectacular Savoia Excelsior Hotel where we enjoy a celebratory dinner.

Testimonial from a Previous Rider

I’ve ridden many time on pie events over the years, and I can say without fear of contradiction they are superb. And that word applies to all the essential components of a great trip – the organisation, accommodation, food, guiding, support, location and routing. Oh – I left out the craic and camaraderie as well!

pie Guides

The Badger’s Tour is a guided ride with groups being led by pie guides who are familiar with the terrain and who help all abilities complete the challenge. For those not familiar with the pie guiding system:

  • We offer guided rides to make sure we offer the very best care to our cyclists
  • All of our guides are experienced cyclists. They range from ex-professional racers to keen amateurs and all are very used to guiding groups of differing abilities, experience and skills
  • All of our guides will navigate their small group of 8 – 10 cyclists from start to finish
  • They are on hand to do mechanical work so there is no waiting around for a mechanic’s van
  • Many pie guides are first aid trained
  • On most days cyclists can change groups (up or down) at any time during the day
  • We make it suitable for most standards of cyclists – check the minimum daily distances and elevations to make sure you are happy with your level of fitness
