Lyke Wake Walk

The Lyke Wake Walk is a challenge walk that traditionally goes from Osmotherley to Ravenscar, encompassing a complete traverse of the North Yorkshire Moors, over a distance of 67 kilometres/42 miles, within a period of 24 hours. The area is littered with tumuli, burial grounds and lowes, from a bygone era when the people of Yorkshire would take their dead for burial on the high points of the Moors. From this came the name of the walk as the Wake Walk and coupled with it the name Lyke, which refers in old English, to a corpse.

Don’t forget, all of our events are bespoke, that means anything you see on this page can be adapted to your requirements.

The team from pie certainly know how to put on a great challenge-day!’ – Anna, Hertford College

This route offers plenty of flexibility and isn’t limited to the example shown here. In the past, we have completed this ride using multiple different routes. The options are endless, what you’ll find below is simply a typical itinerary.

Participants tend to start at the western point of the walk at Osmotherley as it means you have a more impressive finish at the sea at Ravenscar, and as the wind also blows in this direction, you have one less element to combat.

Lyke Wake Walk Itinerary

Day 1

Accommodation at the start of the walk is situated near Lyke Wake Stone. Same sex rooms will be available for people to get changed in, sort their equipment etc.

Briefing followed by dinner at 17.00.

Group then to be subdivided down into smaller groups of 10 each led by one guide before setting off at the start of the trek at 18.00. They will then walk through the night and on through most of the daylight hours of Day 2 to complete the challenge within the 24 hour deadline.

The walk starts off following the Cleveland way with a series of climbs up and down the western end of the North Yorkshire Moors and then flattens out as it crosses the main part of the moors, dipping down into the valley now and again before it eventually falls into the sea. The terrain goes from a small asphalted road, to rough track, laid slabs, grass fields, loose stones, paths which are rock strewn and serious bog if it is wet.

 Day 2

A light meal or sandwiches will be served at every checkpoint (of which there are 6) plus the opportunity to refill water bottles, get hot drinks and any first aid treatment needed.

Accommodation at the end of the walk will be in a nearby hotel in twin share rooms. As people arrive at the end of the walk they will be transferred to the hotel by minibus where they will be shown to their rooms. A celebration evening meal will be provided at the hotel for everyone to eat together and celebrate their achievements.

Day 3

Breakfast. Coach/train home.

Guides:

The fastest walkers will walk it in about 14 hours and the slowest walkers will be about 22 hours. There will be guides at a rate of 1 guide to 10 participants. They will walk in groups of 10 with one guide who will be the person responsible for them for the duration of the trip. In addition to this there will be support vehicles with drivers so that we make sure the slowest and fastest groups are both supported as they reach the road crossing points at different points.

Included

  • Use of facilities and rooms at start location
  • 1 night accommodation in twin rooms at hotel on finish night
  • Food – evening meal on the first day, breakfast, lunch and snacks on the day while walking, evening meal on the last day with celebration drink, breakfast on the final day

Four day trip from Ljubljana to Trieste. Lovely friendly staff with excellent efficient organisation. Very nice hotels and great coffee and lunch stops - only wish they could have organised the weather too! Incredible support in tough conditions. Top notch all round.

My 9th PIE organised cycle challenge for the 40tude charity. Another spectacularly organised PIE ride. The way the team and guides handled and responded to all the surprises and challenges thrown their way, making everything smooth for us punters was extraordinary. And very much appreciated. The most professional and friendly group of tour managers, support team and cycle guides. Well done to the whole PIE team and Paul & Tina. You are simply the best.

Event team did a great job coping with air traffic meltdown in the UK, storms in Slovenia and road closures from visiting diplomats. accommodating, feeding and moving over 30 people on a daily basis is no easy task and they do it very well! Kudos to Paul and team.

This is probably my 6th rode with pie. They always have things organised and when something isn’t quite right it is fixed quickly and with lots of communication. Paul and the team were brilliant in Slovenia with us all. When you are cycling and out of your comfort zone the last thing you want is to worry about the logistics and pie do that all for you. Thanks And see you soon at the next ride!

Pie Events helped me organise the Branditos networking cycles at the International Trademark Association Annual Meeting in London, and sorted routes and guides. Tje rides were thoroughly enjoyable and professionally guided (and 100% safe) Riders from all over the world participated and everyone was effusive in their praise. A fantastic success thanks to Pie Events.

I've just completed my second 4-day group ride managed by pie. Again, it was a fantastic experience. The 3 person pie team - a trip co-ordinator, ride guide, and on-bike medic - were all top professionals as well as great fun. It was another great trip which the whole team enjoyed. I highly recommend pie.

PIE is outstanding and are indeed passionate about their events. Whether Medical, Portering, Providing Food (paying attention to dietary requirements) and Drink (morning coffee, regular rehydration electrolyte tabs, soft drinks at lunch, alcoholic beverages at the end of the day - if you like that sort of thing), excellent hotels & restaurants, - all needs catered for. Staff - highly sympathetic & empathetic - who convert a steep hill into a mere undulation. All staff were immaculately turned out in identical uniforms. Bike maintenance - Brilliant Route planning - beautiful lanes, B roads, cycle paths - superb routes. Overall - excellent management throughout, with high empathy and support for all participants (including a cat!!).

Many many thanks for all your team’s support and guidance over the last 4 days. You provided perfect guides and excellent on the spot management. Your ride support team were always on hand to help and kept our water and salt levels up at all times. Your team were really professional and our whole group gelled around them. Of us 8 riders who did the whole 260 mile trip, we have all gone away absolutely delighted with the achievement AND the organisation provided by yourselves.
