Day 1 – Travel day
Flight from the UK into Malaga. Transfer to Trevélez, the highest town in the Alpujarras, Andalucía, at 1500m. En route to Trevélez we will stop at the Sierra Nevada Information Office for a briefing and to give people the opportunity to purchase maps and any other mementoes.
Short circular walk, approximately one hour, along the river of Trevélez to acclimatise and familiarise ourselves with the area.
Day 2 – Trevélez to Mecina
The walk starts with an incline rising up to 1830m passing small cortijos, or smallholdings, before we make our way along the Bina gorge. We follow the waterways through the pine woods and out on to the other side of the gorge. We pass through oak and chestnut forests, more cortijos some of which are abandoned and some still working, and along various small gorges until we come to the abandoned iron ore mines of Maria Cristina. From here we make our way through Busquistar to the village of Mecina.
Day 3 – Mecina to Capileira
Whereas the previous day was one of woods and gorges, today takes us through various white-washed villages – Pórtugos (still with its village washing area located in a cave), Atalbéitar (in olden times a centre for herbal medicine and a veterinary centre), Pitres (the government centre), Capilerilla (built on the site of an 8th century visigoth temple) and finishing in the lovely village of Capileira. The views stretch out over the Contraviesa below and the Mediterranean beyond.
Day 4 – Capileira to Granada
The valley of Poquiera, home to the three white washed villages of the Poquiera gorge (Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira) is home to several different kinds of orchards – from kiwis to berries to cherries. There are mulberry trees left over from a time of silk growing in the area, along with chestnuts from when the main raw material was this strong wood for houses, etc. We pass the old mines of Nuestra Sra de Fatima, the old mills that fed off the Moorish irrigation channels and enjoy the fabulous views of the valleys below. Just before we come into the village of Cañar, we pass a wonderful waterfall dropping 30m from the 24th dyke built to ward off the effects of run-off and erosion caused by the water.
We finish our trip here at Cañar, a village with a population of a little over 300 people, a pretty church and small central plaza where we enjoy a celebration drink and tapas.
Transfer and evening meal and accommodation in the famous city of Granada.
Day 5 – Travel Day
Optional and dependant on flights – time to visit the Alhambra. Transfer back to Malaga for return flight home.
