Day 1 London – Malaga / Granada

Depart London on an early flight to Malaga/Granada.  Upon arrival we transfer from the airport and travel to Capileira (1432m) in the heart of the Alpujarras, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Here we begin our adventure, starting our trek walking though the white-washed villages of the Alpujarras. On the south side of the Sierra Nevada, set between snow-covered peaks to the north, and the glimmering Med to the south, the Alpujarras offer a combination of outstanding scenery and a climate perfect for trekking, especially in spring and autumn.

Depending on flight times, we may have time to visit the village of Capileira typical of the regional style, before we head up towards our first night’s accommodation in the refuge of the Poqueira gorge.  As we reach the refuge (2500m) nestled in a protected area of this wilderness, the terrain has slowly become harsher and more sparse. Here we can relax, enjoy a drink and a wholesome evening meal and look forward to the challenge tomorrow.  Accommodation in the refuge is in dormitories with bunks. We enjoy a meal at 2500m looking out over the Poquiera gorge from one of the finest view points of the Alpujarras.

Day 2 Refuge (2500m) – Refuge (2500m) via Mulhacen (3482m) and Alcazaba (3396m)

After a typical Spanish breakfast we set off for our next stage of the trek.  With the panorama of the Med to the south stretching away from us, we head ever upwards to Mulhacen, the highest mountain on the Iberian peninsula at 3482m. When we reach Spain’s highest point, trekking up fields of shale, we have wonderful views of the Spanish plains, the rest of the Sierra Nevada range and the city of Granada. Once we have conquered this icon of the Iberian peninsula, we have a steep descent before we can join the path to go up to the peak of Alcazaba. We descend from the top of Alcazaba all the way to the refuge. Accommodation and evening meal in the refuge.

Day 3 Refuge (2500m) – Veleta (3396m) to Finish (2500m)

We leave the refuge striding up the south face of the Sierra Nevada. We pick up the wide dirt track which follows the crest of the ridge and takes us all the way to the southern base of Veleta.

Here we cross to the north side of the Sierra Nevada for our final summit, Veleta (3396m) and our last of Spain’s three highest peaks.  We descend via the north side of the Sierra Nevada to our finish point at the barrier of the National Park at 2500m. We toast our achievements with celebratory drinks before we get a coach to the vibrant city of Granada.

Finish celebratory dinner in a restaurant in Granada. Accommodation in a central hotel.

Day 4

Before our flight to the UK, we have a morning to explore Granada for a cultural experience in this wonderful Moorish city.
